For centuries, variations of hatha yoga’s Surya Namaskar have been used by warriors and athletes in preparation for intense physical endeavors. The series of postures stimulates increased blood flow to the major muscle groups, progressively mobilizes the joints of the trunk and extremities, opens the hips and shoulders, and helps focus the intention of the mind. So there’s no good reason to leave the benefits of this ancient warmup sequence in parquet-floored, patchouli-scented yoga studios. Namaste’!
